THE FIRS was originally the country home of the Peel family who were haberdashers from  Manchester. Built in the early 1870's it is typical of grand Victorian houses of that era containing large airy rooms with high ceilings, plaster cornices and deep skirting boards.

Sadly much of the character of the original house was lost when it was sold in the 1970's. The addition of  extensions to the front, side and rear of the building deprived it of its beautiful bay windows and other features that now cannot be replaced.

We bought the house at the end of 1993 at which time it had been unoccupied for three years, vandalized, and become open to the weather. We came upon it when visiting friends on The Island and at a time when we had become tired with the pace and quality of life in the south of England. It took us two years to establish a home for our family on the ground floor and to prepare the first floor to accommodate our first guests. Work has continued since that time and we have now lovingly restored the house to as near to its original character as has been possible.

Both I, and my husband Frank, have backgrounds in the arts. I as a Royal Ballet  trained dancer and choreologist (the notation of movement invented by Rudolph Benesh) and Frank as a photographer and art school lecturer.
